Conjunctivitis on the Smallholding
(See the photo below of me lying on the couch with the kefir)
Does a post about conjunctivitis belong on a smallholding blog? I think it does — and I hope you’ll agree.
Recently, I was struck down by a heavy cold which, to my misfortune, produced the worst case of conjunctivitis I’ve ever had. For several days my eyes were painfully red, intensely itchy, and thoroughly gluey. To put it mildly, I looked dreadful.
Eventually, my wife took charge and said, “We’ve got to try kefir.”
We drink kefir regularly here on the smallholding, valuing it as a traditional fermented food with a long history. In this case, we soaked eye pads in kefir and, while I lay down, applied them gently over my closed eyes for around ten minutes. We repeated the process at bedtime.
After removing the pads, I didn’t wash my face, allowing any remaining kefir to stay in place and, hopefully, continue doing its work overnight.
Coincidence or not, the results were remarkable. I experienced rapid relief: within 24 hours the glue had gone, and within the following 24 hours the redness had almost completely disappeared.
I’m not presenting this as medical advice — merely sharing a personal experience from our smallholding life. But it was striking enough that I felt it was worth recording here.

A gentle note:
This is simply a true story from our own experience, shared in the spirit of smallholding life rather than as medical advice. Eyes are precious things, and what worked for me may not be right for everyone. If symptoms are severe, persistent, or worrying, it’s always wise to seek medical advice
